RTA awarded $5.6M in federal funding through FTA’s 2021 Passenger Ferry Grant Program

  • February 18th, 2022

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced an award of $5,663,000 in federal funding through the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) 2021 Passenger Ferry Grant Program. The funding will be used to replace the Algiers Point landing barge which has reached its useful life, while standardizing as many components as feasible as part of the agency’s effort to maximize the flexibility of the marine fleet.

“The RTA Board of Commissioners remains committed to pursuing funding that will improve equitable transit options throughout the city,” said Flozell Daniels, Jr., RTA board chair. “Federal funding provided to agencies through programs, such as FTA’s 2021 Passenger Ferry Program, provides the essential support for continued access to ferry service today and into the future.”

“Today’s grant award further solidifies the RTA’s commitment to transforming transit in the City of New Orleans,” said Alex Z. Wiggins, RTA CEO. “Our vision for the future of transit is reliant on building the necessary infrastructure through essential vessels and facilities that will enhance the rider's experience. We are thankful to our partners at the FTA, the RTA Board of Commissioners, and our local and state partners for their continued support of RTA’s vision in improving mobility in the region that is safe and reliable.”

"The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority is the largest public transportation provider in the New Orleans-Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area, and this grant is a welcomed addition to our City's transportation system," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "This award is another great example of how we are leveraging federal dollars to improve our aging infrastructure and quality of life for all New Orleans residents and visitors."

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $45.3 million in fiscal year 2021 grants to projects in 11 states and territories to support passenger ferry service. The Passenger Ferry Grant Program funds capital projects that support existing passenger ferry service, establish new ferry service, and upgrade ferry boats, terminals, and related facilities and equipment. The grants also help transit agencies and ferry companies offset the considerable cost of introducing new, climate-friendly propulsion technologies.
